Understanding the Pressure Switch on your Air Compressors

There are many types of Pressure Switches used commonly on air compressors. Single and three phase models, with and without motor overload protection.

At the base of the pressure switch you have the main inlet port that monitors the pressure of the receiver, some models have a 3 way outlet ports commonly used for the safety valve, gauge and regulator.

The Pressure Switch is an important component for the air compressor, maintaining the proper pressure level demanded by the operator and air-powered equipment.

This is achieved by starting the compressor motor when the pressure is below the min set pressure, and stopping it when the set pressure is reached. The Unloader Valve discharges the air pressure in the pump when the compressor stops, this makes it easier for the compressor to restart.

A pressure switch on the air compressor is a mere mechanical device ensuring seamless control of the compressor’s functionality. It operates on air pressure in the air receiver and starts and stop the air compressor at set pressures.

How it Works: The pressure switch operates through a sophisticated mechanism that responds to changes in air pressure. When you plug in your air compressor, the pressure switch is set to the ON-AUTO mode. As the compressor starts, the motor pressurizes the system until it reaches the preset level. At this point, the pressure switch, equipped with a diaphragm, interrupts the circuit, causing the motor to stop. Simultaneously, excess pressure is released through a relief valve, maintaining the system at an optimum level.
